Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles placed at specific points to relieve pain and support recovery. At Dena Sports Physio it is provided by an acupuncturist who is a member of the Ordre des acupuncteurs du Québec (OAQ), and it can be combined with physiotherapy or other services in one care plan.

What acupuncture is used for
Acupuncture is most often sought for musculoskeletal pain and tension. Results vary from one person to another; your acupuncturist discusses realistic expectations with you.
- Back and neck pain
- Muscle tension and stiffness
- Tension-type headaches
- Shoulder, knee and joint pain
- Support during recovery from injury
Safety
Needles are sterile and used once. Tell your acupuncturist if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a pacemaker or a bleeding disorder, or are afraid of needles — treatment is adapted accordingly. Mild soreness or a small bruise at a needle site can occur and usually resolves quickly.
What to expect at your first visit
- Review of your health history, current medications and goals.
- Explanation of the proposed approach and consent.
- Treatment: needles usually stay in place for several minutes while you rest.
- Advice for the following days and a follow-up plan.
Coverage and billing
Many group insurance plans reimburse acupuncture performed by a member of the Ordre des acupuncteurs du Québec; a receipt is provided after each visit. Coverage varies by plan. More about insurance
Frequently asked questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles are much thinner than those used for injections. Most people feel a brief prick, then a dull, heavy or tingling sensation that is usually well tolerated.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the problem and your response. Your acupuncturist proposes a plan after the first sessions and adjusts it according to your progress.
Can I combine acupuncture with physiotherapy?
Yes. Many patients combine the two, and our team coordinates care under one plan.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Many group plans reimburse acupuncture by an OAQ member. Check your contract for the annual maximum and any conditions.
